The Liberty Shopping Centre is embarking on an exciting one-week programme entitled ‘Learning Week’ to help up-skill members of the local community in everything from first aid to fitness.
Running from Monday 20th – Sunday 26th October, the communities’ first ever ‘Learning Week’ will offer free daily workshops designed to offer a series of engaging activities throughout the Havering community – including five ‘Techy Tea Parties’ and vital health screenings.
Centre Manager, Jonathan Poole, commented: “The community is the heart of The Liberty Shopping Centre and we’re really looking forward to giving the people of Romford a fun week of learning vital skills that they can then use daily.
“We’ve put together a busy, and exciting, schedule of free events with the help of a variety of local organisations and businesses including Havering College, Romford Fire Station, The London Ambulance Service and many more. We really hope our shoppers take full advantage of the services on offer.”
The Liberty’s mobile phone retailers will also be getting into the ‘Learning Week’ spirit by hosting daily ‘Techy Tea Parties’ to teach the community digital skills and answer all of those technical questions.
Anne-Marie Smith, Virgin Media Store Manager and ‘Techy Tea Parties’ host, added: “We’re very excited to be taking part in the ‘Learning Week’ programme and to be opening our doors for our first ’Techy Tea Parties.’
“A lot of people have questions or queries about the technology that they’re using on a daily basis and we’re hoping to iron all these out with a drop in session. We’ll be bringing the knowledge, and of course the tea!”
All ages are invited to share knowledge, learn useful skills and meet new people.
‘Learning Week’ will draw to a close on Sunday 26th October with a community tea party, from 12pm-3pm, including an exclusive quiz from Waterstones, a visit from local community groups and special performances from the Funky Voices Choir and CPA Studios.
Courses will be held in the main square of The Liberty Shopping Centre, Romford, between 9am-6pm. To view the full schedule please visit http://www.theliberty.co.uk/events/ or call 01708 746529.

“Master craftsmen – East London Furniture – will be running a short course teaching people how to make a Hench Bench which will be used to help furnish Rainham Hall when it opens next year. It’s a really exciting opportunity to learn a new skill or perhaps practise a skill you already have, and at the same create something which will be used by visitors to Rainham Hall when it opens. They will also be teaching people how to make smaller wooden objects which can be taken home. If the weather is nice the event will take place in the gardens, and in the event of wet weather we’ll use the church hall just behind the gardens.
If you would be interested in making a bench then please get in touch to book a place by emailing rainhamhall@nationaltrust.org.uk or calling 01708 525 579. Alternatively you can just turn up on the day and learn how to make a smaller object. The event is free and there are no age restrictions -if you would like to bring children along then please make sure you will be available to supervise them.”
