Thanks to a member of the forum who sent in the following comment regarding the recycling of plastic.
“According to the council, we still can’t recycle plastic other than bottles in our orange sacks. There is a bin for mixed plastic in the corner of the Brewery car park near Sainsbury’s, Toby, etc and another inside the entrance of the swimming changing room at Harrow Lodge leisure centre. Also some other boroughs have bring bins for mixed plastic in the street eg Hackney.“
The following is an extract from the council website which clarifies what’s in and what’s out.
Cardboard should be flattened and placed alongside your orange sacks.

With around 330,000 mobility scooters on our roads and pavements, Britain has more mobility scooters than any other country in Europe – and the numbers are growing fast.
For owners, scooters are a lifeline offering freedom and independence, but for some road users they can cause chaos. The number of accidents with mobility scooter drivers is increasing and there’s very little regulation, as mobility scooter drivers don’t need to pass a proficiency test and insurance is not compulsory. Even being registered blind doesn’t legally stop you being allowed to drive one.
With access to South Yorkshire Police’s mobility scooter driving school, this warm hearted, engaging and informative documentary follows the lives of scooter users in South Yorkshire, Derbyshire and North Wales. We meet those living their twilight years to the full with the help of a four-wheeled friend and also hear the stories of those who have fallen foul of the mobility scooter phenomenon.
With ailing health a common theme, the documentary is as much about mortality as it is mobility.

Dear all, I talked last year about setting up a forum cycling club. Well summer seems to be here now so I thought I’d go for a ride next Wednesday morning.
I intend to start from Upminster Library and cycle down Ingrebourne valley and Hornchurch country park to Rainham and return.
I will stop for lunch at the Albion – Flaming grill Pub on Rainham Road before cycling back.
The route is off-road except for a very short stretch from the Park to Upminster Stadium and very flat. It is about 4 miles each way.
If people feel like it we can cycle onto RSPB Rainham which will make it about 10 miles each way, perhaps a bit far for our first ride. We can discuss if anyone wants different kinds of rides etc.
Lunch at the Albion will give people time to talk about cycling and whether we want to have more rides.
Email cycling@havo50forum.org to let me know if you’re coming or for more info.
Regards Ray

As part of Heart Rhythm Week, selected pharmacies displaying the Heart Rhythm Week logo across North East London will be looking to save lives by offering residents free blood pressure checking and heart rhythm monitoring, from Monday 2 June. Everyone is invited to stop by to have their BP checked and heart monitored, and to find out more about reducing their stroke risk.
Pharmacists will be doing the following:
1. Demonstrating the SelfCare Pharmacy practice invented in NEL described at the recent conference and increasingly supported by academics, charities and commissioners.
2. Monitoring the heart rhythm using the AliveCor devices and sending by email the heart rhythm and data to cardiac physiologist (consultant) to interpret the data and email back the results within 24 hours. The patient will be advised by the pharmacist on next steps including referral to a doctor.
3. The patients would have their blood pressure monitored using the only NICE approved device(Microlife).
4. The patients would complete a SelfCare Assessment Form (SAF) which will identify the patients’ health, wellbeing and social factors affecting them.
The pharmacies will be set up for heart monitoring and blood pressure checks from Monday 2 June. The list of pharmacies participating in Heart Rhythm Week can be found at www.nellpc.org.uk.
Ellen Sheridan, Information Officer from the Stroke Association in London says; “High blood pressure has been called the ‘silent killer’ because many people do not realise they have it or how dangerous it can be. Getting your blood pressure tested is simple, there are no needles, we put an inflatable cuff on your arm and it is quick and painless. It is really important to get checked regularly as your blood pressure does change over time, taking control of it can reduce your risk of stroke. According to the Stroke Association there are over 13,500 people across Londonwho have a stroke each year and over 128,000 people living with the effects of stroke.”
Hemant Patel, the Secretary of the committee representing local pharmacists said: “We are urging the local community to stop by their pharmacy this Heart Rhythm Week to get their heart and blood pressure checked. It’s really important for residents to know the risk factors associated with their blood pressure and heart, and that’s why we’re here to give advice and information to hopefully reduce the health problems like stroke. The service will be available through 100 pharmacies in the six North East London boroughs. We will be working alongside the NHS and the local doctors to detect early signs of heart problems.”
The pharmacies will be set up for heart monitoring and blood pressure checks from Monday 2 June. The list of pharmacies participating in Heart Rhythm Week can be found at www.nellpc.org.uk. To find out more information please contact Hemant Patel on 05601 252940
