Skyride – “Goodmayes Tour of the Duck Ponds” – Steady – Sunday 10th August – Start Time 10:00 a.m.

The next local Skyride this weekend is a nice steady ride around Goodmayes and Mayesbrook Parks.

It is again completely off road except for a short stretch which can be walked if necessary.

What’s even better you don’t have to ride your bike all the way to the start of the ride as the entrance to Goodmayes Park is short distance from Chadwell Heath Station.

Ray is leading this one too.

“Goodmayes Tour of the Duck Ponds”

Steady – Sunday 10 August – Start Time 10:00 a.m. – 6 miles

Start from Goodmayes Park Green Lane IG3 9PH

Join us on this short but very sweet ride starting in Goodmayes Park.  This ride really shows you the best way to enjoy the parks in Redbridge is by bike!  From Goodmayes Park we head over to Goodmayes Park Recreational Ground before continuing south into Mayesbrook Park where we will take a lap of the duck ponds before having a little breather and time for refreshments.  This ride really is perfect for those wanting to get out on their bike, enjoy the parks and have a chat without having to stretch your legs too much

Older Persons Minister – Response from the Pensions Minister

Dear All, we have now recieved a response (indeed 2 responses) from the Pensions Minister in response to our letters to the Prime Minister asking for an Older Persons’ Minister.

The response was not what we were hoping for and the jist of the reason for refusal is that all government departments must take older people into consideration in thier policy making and that a dedicated Minister might lead others to think that they no longer had that responsibility.

As Dame Angela Watkinson says in her covering letter:

“We may have lost round 1 but we shall carry on!”

Attached is Dame Angela’s covering letter and the 2 letters from the Pensions Minister.

Exploring Rainham Marshes RSPB Reserve – The Essex Way

Steady – Sunday 3rd August – Start Time 10:00 a.m. – 8 Miles

Start from Rainham C2C Train Station (by platform 1 – London bound) Ferry Lane RM13 9HY

This is an off-road ride where you can spot a variety of interesting, sometimes rare, birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians as well as bugs and beasties of all kinds. RSPB Rainham Marshes is just a stone’s throw from London. Located on ancient marshland nestled beside the river Thames, it really is a special place to enjoy the great outdoors. A new cycle route links the villages of Purfleet and Rainham and runs beside the reserve, along the Thames, looping round and passing the WW2 concrete barges and the “diver”.

The reserve itself offers a leisurely amble in a superb setting with fantastic facilities in the eco-friendly visitor centre where we will have time to stop and enjoy the cafe and shop.  For more information on Rainham Marshes RSPB Reserve please click on the link https://www.rspb.org.uk/reserves/guide/r/rainhammarshes

PAPER PLANES

From the team that brought you Lighting Up The Lane in 2012.

The Queen’s Theatre, Hornchurch proudly presents the World Premiere of an awe-inspiring new musical drama, Paper Planes.

A New Musical by Dave Ross, Gerry Sweeney, Patrick O’Sullivan

Music and lyrics by Steven Markwick and Dave Ross

Wed 30 July –  Sat 2 August

Starring a cast of over 60 local performers and commemorating the First World War centenary, Paper Planes tells the amazing story of valiant pilot William Leefe Robinson VC, who was based at Suttons Farm Airfield in Hornchurch.

London 1916. German Zeppelin ‘Baby Killers’ are indiscriminately dropping bombs on innocent targets. People are in fear for their very existence. After an 18 month campaign which brought devastation to the people of London, Robinson emerges as victor after shooting down a Schutte Lanz SL11, to the cheers of the ordinary man. Elevated to the status of hero, Robinson wins the Victoria Cross and with this his life was to change forever.

You will be moved by this story of love, hope and courage in a magical new musical produced by the team that brought you 2012’s sell-out show Lighting up the Lane.

Director: Patrick O’Sullivan

Musical Director: Steven Markwick

Choreographer: Liz Marsh

Local GPs launch consultation on intermediate care services – tell us what you think

Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) have today launched a consultation ‘Making intermediate care services better’. The 12 week consultation runs until 5pm, 1 October 2014.

Intermediate care means services that provide people with specialised care from nurses, therapists and other professionals, without them needing to go to (or stay longer in) hospital.

These services can be provided in different places – people’s own homes, community rehab units or residential homes, for example.

During the past year we have been working with local authorities and providers to try out new ways of working and look at how to improve the care that people receive. We want people to get better care and to recover more quickly. We want them to be able to stay at home, if at all possible, because that’s what patients and their families tell us they want.

As a result, we’ve trialled two new intermediate care services:

Community treatment team (CTT) – a team of doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, social workers and others who together care for people having a health or social care crisis at home so that they either don’t need to go into hospital or return home from hospital sooner. It runs from 8am – 10pm, seven days a week.

Intensive rehabilitation service (IRS) – a team of physios, occupational therapists, healthcare assistants and others offering intensive physio and other therapy in a patient’s own home, with up to four visits a day depending on the patient’s needs. The service operates from 8am – 8pm, seven days a week.

Patient satisfaction rates for both these services have been consistently high across the three boroughs since the trials began. On a scale of 1-10, with 10 being ‘very satisfied’ with the service, CTT has averaged 8.7 and IRS 9.0 out of 10.

As a result, we now want to permanently establish the new intermediate care services (Community Treatment Team and Intensive Rehabilitation Service), which would mean that more people would receive care in their own homes. We want to merge the three existing community rehabilitation units into one unit, on the King George Hospital site in Goodmayes.

Since the trial, most people have been receiving care in their own homes, and as a result a lot of the community beds are not being used.

We want to know what you think about our proposals – your views, whether you agree or disagree, and if there is anything else you want us to consider. A copy of the consultation document is attached, and it is also available on our websites:

If you would like someone to come and talk to your community group or organisation about our proposals, please email haveyoursay@onel.nhs.uk or call 020 3688 1089

It’s your NHS and we want you to help shape it locally.
