Come and have some fun in the garden, bring your family too, for the launch of ‘Growing Friends’… all free.  May 10 2015 – 2-5 p.m.

Come for the official launch and presentation at 3pm. We’ll go through the development of the garden from a jungle to a beautiful communal gardening space in the 2 years since we’ve been here. And tell you more about the club.

On the hour – We’ll run some historical tours of the garden which dates back to the 1770’s when the old house was built and the park was the Heaton estate. Lots to tell including the recent discovery of a second well and pineapples!

And on the half hour – We’ll also take you around the garden showing you what is growing, plans for the future and some of the more unusual things that we’re growing. You can say hi to the bees and maybe our pheasants will be there for you too.

Refreshments and social 2-5pm

The club is for people over 50 (but won’t exclude anyone). It will take place on first Wednesday of each month. The launch will introduce people to the historical walled garden and what the club’s all about – gardening, social, learning, exercise, events and activities etc. Members can develop the club to how they want it to be.

Membership is £3 per visit (to pay for refreshments) and there are discounts for subscriptions paid in advance. Members also have the benefit of discounted organic foods from the garden.

Havering Council is urging residents to be cautious when paying their council tax over the phone. Some residents have been receiving calls asking for their bank or credit card details so their Council Tax or Council Tax arrears can be paid.

Any residents, who receive such a call, should check that it is genuine:

• Explain to the caller you wish to check their identity, write down their name and department and hang up your telephone.
• Scammers will keep the telephone line open so when you make a call out straight away you are still talking to the scammer.
• To avoid this, wait at least 15 minutes or use another line to make the call, such as a mobile phone, call Havering Council on 01708 434343 and ask for the person and department.

Leader of the Council, Councillor Roger Ramsey, said:

“Scammers are using a number of methods to get account details from people. Anyone who receives a call asking for their bank details should check its authenticity, whether it is from the Council or not.

“Staff at the council are aware of this scam and will be happy to assist anyone who wants to check that the call is genuine. Anyone who receives a call that turns out to be fraudulent should report it to Action Fraud.”

I am a PhD researcher in University College Cork, Ireland,  carrying out a study on 50 – 75 year old people and how they engage with cognitively stimulating activities. The research is focused on the negative aspects of ageism and how it may affect Alzheimer’s disease. From Romford Station turn left, go along South Street. At Market Place, turn left into High Street and we are 50 metres on left.

 Brewery Car Park (Pay on exit) From car park go into South Street and follow route from railway station.

Dagenham and Ingrebourne Valley are a step closer today after a new walking and cycling bridge was lifted into place in east London.

Bretons Bridge, which spans the River Beam between the Bretons Outdoor Centre and the Beam Valley Country Park, will provide a new link for people in Barking, Dagenham and Havering.
